Dry fruits ‘holige’, sweet dish

This is a very different holige ( a sweet dish very prevalent and loved in India) sent in by Neeta Hegde. She sent it to me long back, and I’ve been keeping it under cover unwittingly :). Here it is, Neeta!

It has a dry fruit filling, instead of the regulation cocnut+jaggery or lentils+jaggery fillings.

  • 1/2 cup almonds
  • 1/2 cup cashew nut
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • Dates(dry), handful
  • Pista, a few pieces
  • Dry gram dal, 1 cup
  • Sugar, 1 cup
  • Milk, 1 cup
  • Chapati dough (salt added), about 2 cups mixed with a little oil and water to bind

Blend the almonds, cashews, pista, dates, and raisins in a blender. To this add dry gram and sugar. Grind it again. Place the mixture in a bowl and kneed it properly with 2 or 3 spoons of milk. This makes the filling for the ‘holige’. Now take a little of wheat dough (chapati dough), flatten and shape like a small bowl. Place a small ball of the filling inside. Seal it well and roll it out just like you would a chapati. On a flat tava (pan) pour a little ghee and roast the chapati well on both sides until browned.

Serve hot!
