Grilled potatoes

I’ve never tried marinating and grilling. You know, one of those things you feel you’ll never get right. Even after years of getting an oven and grill. But enough drooling over the kababs in restaurants I told myself. Get going already! So these were a first attempt and they’re just marinated and grilled potatoes and they turned out just fine.

I’d also been wanting to use the lovely serving platter Dee gave us and this was the perfect pairing of a dish to a platter. The picture doesn’t do justice to this starter though, I really wish I’d taken a better pic.


You need:

  • 30-35 baby potatoes, washed and scrubbed (serves about 5 people)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 pods garlic, crushed
  • 2 teaspoons seasoning – I used a chilli-oregano seasoning now available in Fab India. You can use non-spicy herbs like oregano and thyme as well.
  • Salt to taste

Making the potatoes:

  • Boil the scrubbed potatoes in a pot of water until they are tender, not too soft.
  • Cool and then peel the skin. (This is the most time consuming part, or does it feel like that coz it’s the most boring?!). You can leave the skin on for a crisp feel and more texture. But make sure you poke plenty of holes with a fork to let the marinade in. Or cut the slightly larger ones in half.
  • In a bowl, pour in the olive oil. Add the garlic, seasoning, and salt and whisk well.
  • Put the potatoes into the seasoning mix and give them a good stir so that all the potatoes are coated with the marinade.
  • Refrigerate overnight. With this, you don’t need to add any more flavoring. The goodness of the seasoning’s all seeped in by now.
  • Pierce them on to thin metal skewers (some of the baby potatoes can be size xtra small)
  • Grill for about 10 minutes until the potatoes are roasted golden. Slide them on to a platter and serve hot on a salad bed – of shredded carrots/cucumbers/onions.

    Hey Anu! I got a whole packet of baby potatoes coz they looked so adorable sitting pretty at the store. I was going to figure out what to do with them later! But now I know what to do, thanks to your recipe. I’m going to grill in my microwave though. Will let STB know how it turned out!

    Turned out ok Anu, the potatoes didn’t brown though! The position of the heating element in my microwave was not set in the right position! I’ll blame it on the horrible user manual! 😉 But the potatoes vanished! Yeah all of them into hungry tummies ofcourse! I got a mixed bag of reactions. The oldies, Rahul and Sid rejected them. The rest of us and the tiny tots loved them! I used pizza dressing (oregano, pepper, salt, chilli flakes). Will try a different dressing next time. But I’m definitely going to make more of this more often!

    Hi Anu.. i tried these and they came out good… i added a tsp or two of vinegar and it tasted great… thanks for the nice recipe…
