Quirky grape or cherry sweet snack

Grape fruit sweet

I don’t know what to call this! It’s a different kinda sweet snack that’s made with grapes or candied cherries, rolled in a bread and sugar powder. With some colour, of course! My mother-in-law learnt it from a neighbour and I’m posting it on demand :)! It’s very easy to make, it’s very different and it’s novelty will sure raise some eyebrows…so be sure to try this at your next tea party! When you bite into it the grape is a sure surprise! Kids should love it too.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Assembly time: 10 minutes

Serves: Makes 10 sweets

You need:

bread powder

powdered bread

  • 1 cup powdered bread.¬†Just trim the edges of plain bread. Break into pieces and whir in a blender. You’ll get a nice powder like this. You don’t need to dry the bread or anything. You can try it with whole wheat bread as well.
  • 10-12 green or black seedless grapes OR candied cherries
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • A few specks of food colouring, one or more colours as you’d like.
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cream. The cream at my place comes from my mother-in-law removing the top layer of cream from the milk daily and storing it in the fridge. So it’s thick! The fresh cream available at stores is thin, so if you’re using this, just use a teaspoon – or enough to bind the bread and sugar powder together.
  • A few spoons of dessicated coconut (dried coconut)

To make:

  1. Depending on how many colours you want to make – divide the bread powder into different bowls. For this recipe, she divided the 1 cup bread powder into 2 half cup portions.

    bread mix

    bread mix

  2. Into the half cup bread powder, mix in half of the powdered sugar and food colouring. Here she has used green first.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of cream and bind so that it becomes a rough dough.
  4. Take a grape/cherry and press a small portion of the bread mix around it. The mix should cover the grape completely. Press into a round shape.
  5. Roll the shapes in the desicated coconut powder immediately and place on a plate. Press as many grapes as you’d like in this coloured mix.
  6. Repeat  steps 1 to 5 with a different food colour this time.

Don’t put the one top fruit shapes one on top the other in a plate as the mixture is quite soft and they will lose their shape. Place them side by side.

Serve right away OR refrigerate and serve cold.
