Instant Rasam

rasamOn a cloudy day, this is heaven. But even on a regular day, this hits the spot! South Indian rasam without the bother of cooking dal. It even works as a very light soup! We made it at home today and is it perfect, or what :)?

What you need:

  • 4 medium sized tomatoes
  • 2-3 pods of garlic, peeled (leave out the garlic if you’re not partial to it and it still tastes great!)
  • 1 teaspoon jeera powder (cumin seed powder)
  • 1 teaspoon crushed black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dhania powder (coriander seed powder)
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind paste (if you want it extra sour)
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of turmeric powder (optional)
  • 1-2 cups of water (depending on how thick or thin you want the rasam)
  • For the garnish: a wee bit of ghee (clarified butter), curry leaves, coriander leaves, jeera seeds

How to make it:

  • Par boil the tomatoes in boiling water for a few minutes. Remove from water and peel off the skin. Remove the pith.
  • Crush the tomato pulp by hand or if you want a fine texture, whir it in a processor.
  • Crush the garlic by hand or add that to the processor too, along with the tomato pulp.
  • Add the tomato(-garlic) pulp and water into a vessel and bring to a boil.
  • Toss in all the other ingredients and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Don’t keep it on the stove too long after you add the powders.
  • Take off the heat.
  • Heat the ghee in a small pan (thadka pan). When hot, throw in the curry leaves and jeera seeds. Take off the heat in a minute and pour it over the hot rasam.
  • Sprinkle the coriander leaves on top.

Drink it hot out of a cup or mix in with plain rice.

    Yep!! Hot Rasam with Rice and a lil bit of Ghee is just heaven!!

    BTW i would really love to have the Tom Yum recipe! it is a fav of mine.. any help pointers?
